Score Big this Super Bowl Sunday!
February 2, 2018Health & Fitnesshealth tipshealthy lifestyleinjury preventionmanaging painsports medicine

Did you know . . .

  • 3 million people watched the Super Bowl on television last year
  • an additional 1.72 million people watched online
  • Jerry Rice holds the record for the most touchdown catches and most points scored in Super Bowl history
  • the Steelers have won the most Super Bowls (depending on Sunday’s game, the Patriots could tie this up)
  • Charles Haley and Tom Brady both have five Super Bowl wins
  • the Super Bowl is broadcast in 34 languages
  • on Super Bowl Sunday, Americans will drink an estimated 325.5 million gallons of beer, 1.25 billion chicken wings and eat roughly 28,000,000 pounds of chips!

We’re just days away from the big game!

Even though we’re not playing in the Super Bowl, viewers can still end up with tight, sore muscles after the big game. Sitting for long periods of time can cause everything from back pain to neck tension.

Super Bowl Sunday is infamous for delicious foods that are super unhealthy, fried or just in general ‘extra!’

We share tips on staying healthy on this unhealthy day.

Get your blood moving this Super Bowl Sunday:

pre-game:

  • workout in the morning – start the day off right by sweating some pounds away

game time:

  • instead of playing a drinking game, make it an exercise game – see who at the Super Bowl party can do the most pushups
  • stand up and move during every commercial break
  • the Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests incorporating pushups into your Super Bowl viewing experience – for example, when one team scores a first down, the fans of the opposing team have to do 10 pushups
  • or watch and workout doing jump squats, pushups, and step-ups
  • walk up and down stairs for a bit of cardio, or do jumping jacks

Stay somewhat healthy:

  • serve wholesome snacks, such as veggies and hummus
  • kick off with fiber – make turkey chili (using extra-lean ground meat) and set that out to eat first. This filling dish will set the stage for a healthy game day
  • try baking or grilling the chicken wings, instead of frying them
  • bring a healthy side dish to the party
  • use smaller plates
  • don’t drink your calories
