Maximize Your Time with the Doctor
Whether you are see your primary care physician, a specialist or several different doctors, being a good patient is as important as finding a good doctor. Being a good patient can mean the difference between recovery and relapse, pain and pain-free, or sick or healthy. Here are a few tips to help you create a positive outcome with your doctor.
1. BE ON TIME. Yes, there are some doctors offices where the wait is long. Many times there is a good reason for this like reviewing your chart, doing research or taking extra time with another patient that needs it. I’m sure there is a good reason for many patients being late, too; but this can end up cutting your time or making your appointment seem rushed. So, be on time.
2. BE PREPARED. Showing up to your appointment with your paperwork, insurance card and ID will get you through the registration process on time. For the doctor, have past medical records, list of medications, and a written list of symptoms or questions to cover.
3. BE HONEST. The doctor cannot properly treat you without honest symptoms and problems. Sometimes they may seem embarrassing or you many think it’s not relevant; but open communication is the best way to receive proper care.
4.DON’T BE EXPECTING A CURE-ALL PILL. A healthy lifestyle includes proper eating, exercise and avoiding damaging habits. Even if there are medications that will help treat your condition, a healthy lifestyle will enhance the efforts of the medication and lead to better health and better outcomes.
5. ASK QUESTIONS. Take a list of questions with you to the visit. When the doctor talks about treatment plans and medications, ask questions. Take an active role in your treatment by knowing and understanding the plan. There is never a dumb question.
