PRP Injection-Regenerative Medicine-The Medicine of the Future
What is PRP?
PRP is Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP is an innovative approach to tissue regeneration that uses the patient’s own blood. After obtaining blood from the patient it is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the myriad of growth factors and anti-inflammatory proteins in the plasma that, once injected into the site of injury, produces a powerful and permanent healing response. The treatment, platelet-rich plasma therapy, or P.R.P., involves centrifuging a person’s own blood until it contains a concentrated mix of plasma cells and growth factors and then injecting the resulting substance directly into the injured tissue. In theory, the distilled growth factors (a protein or substance that helps stimulate growth) should speed healing and improve the tissue’s health. Today, recreational athletes reportedly clamor for P.R.P. to treat everything from tennis elbow to back pain.
How is it performed?
PRP is obtained from a patient’s own blood. A simple blood sample is taken and then transferred into a high power centrifuge and concentrating device.
How Long Does it Take?
A PRP injection can be done in 30 minutes or less. One of the most exciting new developments in medicine today is the use of regenerative injections to enhance healing and eliminate pain without the need for surgery. These techniques harness the tremendous healing power of the patient’s own plasma or bone marrow to treat a wide spectrum of orthopedic conditions.
How Long Does it Take to Recover?
Since the stem cells come from your own body, there’s little chance of infection or rejection. Stem cell injections are done on an outpatient basis and tend to have a quick and easy recovery.
Does it hurt?
A local anesthetic is used. This results in minimal discomfort.
What does it cost?
Most insurance will not cover stem cell procedures. Ask your doctor for payment options
