Dr. Chauncy Eakins Treating Chronic Pain by Addressing Body and Mind
Michigan Sports and Spine Center is excited to announce that Chauncy L. Eakins, MD MS has joined our practice as a lead pain specialist, following a one-year fellowship in interventional pain medicine with Dr. Jeff S. Pierce. Dr. Eakins is a licensed physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor and also a licensed physical therapist. The combination creates a holistic approach to treating pain and musculoskeletal injuries.
Dr. Eakins has a passion for assisting motivated individuals to identify the source of their pain and work through an aggressive program which includes a combination of education, physical therapy, medication, interventional joint and spine procedures, and even cognitive behavioral therapy if necessary to get back to an active life style. Dr. Eakins believes that often times addressing the mind, body, and spirit is necessary in the treatment process for difficult chronic pain cases.
Dr. Eakins also shares, “I have a great interest in Regenerative medicine. Science is proving that the body has the capacity to heal itself. Physicians assist in this process by using your own stem cells and platelet rich plasma, which has the capacity to repair tendons and cartilage by injecting them into the damaged tissues. I believe that this will be the future of medicine for joint degeneration, athletic injuries, and occupational repetitive type injuries.”
Another diagnostic tool that Dr. Eakins has expertise with is electrodiagnostic medicine (which includes electromyography and nerve conduction studies used to identify the location, severity, and chronicity of a nerve injury). It assists in identifying whether musculoskeletal weakness is the result of a nerve injury or muscle disease, making treatment options more effective.
For Dr. Eakins, becoming a physician in the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation with fellowship training in interventional musculoskeletal medicine and pain was a natural progression from growing up in a family where athletics was part of life to working as a physical therapy assistant at Dayton Sports Medicine in Dayton Ohio, and on to obtaining a graduate degree in human anatomy.
