Osgood-Schlatter Disease

Overview
Osgood-Schlatter disease is a painful swelling of the bump on the upper part of the shinbone, just below the knee.  This bump is called the anterior tibial tubercle.

Causes
Small injuries due to repeated overuse before the area has finished growing
Common in adolescents who play soccer, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics

Symptoms
Painful swelling over a bump on the lower leg bone (tibia) in one or both legs
Leg or knee pain which gets worse with running, jumping or climbing stairs
Tenderness to pressure
Swelling

Diagnosis
Physical examination and medical history consultation
X-ray

Treatment
Rest and decreased activity
Application of ice
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Bracing
